- ┌──────────────────────────┐
- │ DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE │
- └──────────────────────────┘
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
- buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
- are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
- some request registration while others require it, some specify a
- maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
- simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with
- printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
- the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
- exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
- programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
- comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
- ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
- author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
- software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
- example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
- disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
- find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
- commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
- easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead
- is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
- guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

- =================================================
- OVERVIEW
- =================================================
-
- The Computer System Manager (CSM) is an application designed for
- computer users both at home or in the business used to keep track of
- all computer systems and the hardware (accessories) that have been
- installed into them and the software that they are licensed to use.
-
- Please note that this program IS NOT a disk manager but rather a tool
- to either be used by businesses or at home to keep track of hardware
- and software on computer systems.
-
- Simple and straight forward menuing software allows you to add or
- update records in the system using arrow keys and function keys to all
- the features of the system.
-
- Many standard reports are provided in different sequences to list
- items from the files. In fact included in the software a Free Form
- Report generator which will allow you to design, run and save your own
- reports.
-
- Several configuration options allow to configure CSM to your
- specifications including printer support to support any printer on the
- market.
-
-
- Features
- ========
-
- - Simple to use pull down menus and pop-up windows
-
- - Context sensitive help available on all screens
-
- - Organize information at the machine or system level
-
- - Organize hardware information, disk drives, cards,
- memory, printers, etc. installed on each system.
-
- - Organize software information, determine what software
- is licensed to each system
-
- - Each system can contain as much information as needed
-
- - Up to 2 billion entries can be entered into each of
- the databases. You are only limited by the size of the
- hard drive you are running the software on.
-
- - Locating records is easy using the menus.
-
- - Print options allow you to print on any printer that may
- be available. Provided standard are the printer setups

-
- for HP, IBM and several others.
-
- - Many standard reports are provided. If you have specific
- requirements then you can use the Free Form Report
- generator and design your own.
-
- - Complete tools are provided to manage your files and keep
- them performing at there best.
-
- - Fully configurable including screen color selection,
- printer setup and more.
-
-
- Installation
- ============
- Please see the accompanying documentation for complete installation
- instructions.
-
- When the installation is complete:
-
- - Review the VENDOR, SOFTWARE and HARDWARE tables
-
- - Review and set the options file (Press [F6]) you
- must set the printer to your own configuration
- or some of the reports will not fit on regular paper.
-
- - If the version of the software you installed had
- sample files please review these to get a feel of how
- the program works. If you want to delete these files
- and start over then the following DOS commands can
- be entered from the CSM directory:
-
- DELETE SOFTW.DBF
- DELETE HARDW.DBF
- DELETE SYSTEM.DBF
-
- And the next time you start up CSM add a U to the
- command line as follows:
-
- CSM U
-
- This will build the new files for you.
-
-
- System Requirements
- ===================
- MS/DOS or PC/DOS 3.3 or higher
-
- At least 2mb minimum hard disk space. Actual amount will depend on
- the size of the various collections.
-
-
-
- Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 3
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Any standard printer including HP laser.
-
- One floppy drive either 3 1/2 or 5 1/4 any density.
-
-
- Limitations
- ===========
- There are no real limitations in the CSM software. You may store as
- much information as you like and are only limited by the amount of
- hard disk space you have. Each of the Files may contain a maximum of
- 2 billion records which should be plenty for most users or businesses.
-
- In the standard version of CSM only the Free Form report generator may
- print to a network (Novell) printer. If you would like full network
- (Novell) support contact us for special pricing.
-
-
- Browsing The Files
- ==================
- As you begin to add records to the various files the software will
- automatically put you into a browse mode (when there is at least one
- record). The following is an example of the browse screen for the
- Vendor Table:
-
- ╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║ Vendor Table ║
- ╠═══════════════╤═══════════════════════════════════╣
- ║ Vendor Name │ Full name of Vendor ║
- ╟───────────────┼───────────────────────────────────╢
- ║APPTECH │Application techniques, Inc. ║
- ║Blink │Blinkinc ║
- ║CA │Computer Associates ║
- ║CompUSA │CompUSA ║
- ║Intiut │Intuit ║
- ║Maxstor │Maxstor ║
- ║MicroSoft │MicroSoft ║
- ║SPC │Software Publishing, Inc ║
- ╚═══════════════╧═══════════════════════════════════╝
-
- By using the [UpArrow] and [DownArrow] keys you can move to different
- records in the file. Using the [PgUp] and [PgDn] keys you can move a
- full screen at a time (about 16 records), and using [ALT]-[PgUp] or
- [ALT]-[PgDn] you can move to the first record or last record in the
- file. When you have found the record you would like to view or change
- (indicated by highlighting) press the [ENTER] key. The record will now
- be displayed.
-
- Also note at the bottom of the screen there is a field used for
- searching. If you have a large file you can use this field to
- position the highlighted item to a range of records. For example if
- you are in the SYSTEM file and have used the select key (see below)
- for System ID and you are looking for a SYSTEM-01 then enter into this
-
-
-

-
- field SYS or SYST or SYSTE or SYSTEM and the highlighted item will be
- the first item. You can use this feature to move quickly through the
- files.
-
- If you would like to view records in a different order press the [F10]
- key and a small menu will appear at the lower right hand corner of the
- screen giving you the choices for the file you are browsing. The
- following example illustrates the alternates for the Software file:
-
-
- ┌>Select Key<─┐
- │ Product Name│
- │ Program Type│
- └─────────────┘
-
- Each file in CSM has different selection keys so you will need to
- experiment as to what select keys are best for you.
-
-
- Screen Saver
- ============
- After 2 minutes of inactivity CSM will display the following screen:
-
- ┌──────────────────────────────┐

- DATA ENTRY OF INFORMATION
- =================================================
-
- This is the menu that you will used to select the various files for
- data entry (adding, changing, or deleting records) from the system.
- Up selecting this menu item the following menu will appear:
-
- ╔═══════════════════════════╗
- ║ System File ║
- ║ Software Records ║
- ║ Hardware Records ║
- ╚═══════════════════════════╝
-
- The first menu item under the DATA ENTRY item is SYSTEM. CSM has an
- organization for keeping records together and can be summarized as
- follows:
-
- To add either hardware or software records there must
- be a corresponding SYSTEM record to be used.
-
- To delete a system record ALL of the hardware and
- software records must either be deleted or reassigned
- to another SYSTEM record.
-
- Hardware and Software records are not linked together
- with one another.
-
- If you are using CSM for a business and you have items that do not
- belong to a system we suggest that you create a dummy SYSTEM record
- say using the SYSTEM ID of "UNASSIGNED" and place all those items
- under this system.

-
- The Printer Setup Utility is used by both the Free Form Report
- generator and reports that need more than 80 characters to print, such
- as the wide reports.
-
- The Printer Setup Utility is selected directly from the submenu of
- MISC.
-
- When you are ready to use this function, highlight PRINTER SETUP, then
- press [ENTER]. Once selected, the list of printer configurations will
- appear.
-
- The software uses three different setup strings to determine how to
- lay out lines of text before the actual printing begins. These
- strings also determine when a page is full and when to skip to the
-
-
-
- Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 44
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- next page, and finally what codes (escape sequences) need to be sent
- to the printer also. The software will automatically select the
- proper setup string and page size that best fits the report. If one
- line of the report will fit in the width specified by WIDTH 1, the
- level 1 Setup String will be used. If the line of the report is too
- wide for the level 1 Width, but less than or equal to the Level 2
- Width, the Level 2 Setup String will be used. If the line of the
- report is too wide for the level 2 Width, but less than or equal to
- the Level 3 Width, the Level 3 Setup String will be used.
-
- If the report is still too wide, the software will utilize more than
- one line on the page per printed record printed, and will print on
- each line as many fields as will fit without breaking, and then will
- wrap to the next line. If a line has to wrap to the next line, the
- software will adjust the number of lines per page to compensate for
- the fact that fewer records will fit on a page.
-
- You can force the software to use the same Setup String, Width and
- Line all the time by setting all three levels to the same value. This
- is a good idea when you are using 80 column paper in a 130 column
- printer.
-
-
- Printer Setup Strings
- ---------------------
- To follow along with this example, you need to select the printer with
- the configuration ID of "HP", printer name "Hewlett Packard Laser Jet
- II" from the list of printer configurations. Once selected, read the
- following explanation of the Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Width and
- Length Fields.
-
- Notice the /027 in each of the Setup Strings and the Reset String.
- Anytime you want to include a character in a string that cannot be
- entered through the keyboard, you can enter a backslash followed by
- the character's ASCII value. You MUST use three positions for the
- ASCII value even if is less than 100. On a Hewlett Packard Laser
- Printer, the Escape key, which acts as a control character, has an
- ASCII value of 27. /027 was entered because three positions need to
- be filled. This value (/027) tells the printer that the text to
- follow is not to be printed, but is to interpreted as configuration
- information
-
- The Level 1 Setup String tells the software to set the printer to
- Courier font, that 80 characters will fit on one line and that no more
- than 55 lines of the page will be used.
-
- The Level 2 Setup String tells the software to switch to the 16.6
- characters per inch Pica font and that 130 characters will fit on one
- line.
-
- The Level 3 Setup String tells the software to remain at 16.6
- characters per inch, but to switch to Landscape (sideways) printing.
-
-
-
- Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 45
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Now, 170 characters will fit on one line (Width = 170) and the page
- length will be reduced (Length = 40).

- please give us a call at our Technical Support number listed in the

- Printer ID
- ----------
-
- Format: 3 position character field
-
- Contents: This field is a unique identifier that you will
- assign to each new configuration. When you want
- to print a report you simply add the configuration
- ID number that corresponds to the printer that
- you will be used to print the report.
-
-
- Printer Name
- ------------
-
- Format: 30 position character field
-
- Contents: Used this field to enter a brief description
- of the printer that this configuration will be
- set for. The easiest description in the brand
- and type of printer. If there are several
- printers that are the same brand and type, you
- need an additional identifier such as a
- number or letter appended to this field.
-
- ALSO, if more than one configuration will be set
- up for the SAME printer, it is advisable that the
- description entered be such that it will be easy
- to identify the features the individual
- configurations have.
-

-
- Format: 1 position numeric field
-
- Contents: This field is the printer that all reports
- with this configuration should be routed to.
- If the software is running on a Novell network,
- this number would correspond to the
- network-assigned printer number, where the first
- network printer is number 1, the second network
- printer is number 2 and so on.
-
-
-

- The Letter Writer
- =================
- The bad news is that this is not WordPerfect. The good news is that
- this is not WordPerfect. Hopefully, this will be a lot easier to
- master.
-
- Theoretically, this program can write files up to 64K. But, and this
- is a big BUT, you must have enough memory in your RAM to do it. You
- must have enough available RAM equal to twice the size of the file you
- are editing. In most cases this will never be a problem. But you might
- not be able to write THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL.

- name and press [ENTER] to insert it, or press [ESC] to exit without
- inserting a field.
-
- Notice that the field name is surrounded by curly braces
- ("{"Smith"}"). When the document is printed, anything surrounded by
- the curly braces will be replaced by the actual contents of the field.
-
- If you have inserted fields into your document for Mail Merging and
- press [ALT]-[P] to print, you will be asked if you want to print more
- than one document. Pressing [Y] will call the "File Filter" program.
- This program is discussed later.

-
- ALT-M: MARGINS
- --------------
- The start up margins for the printer are set at left column 1 and
- right column 80. However you can change these by pressing [ALT]-[M]
- and entering the desired settings. When you change them the on-screen
- display will adjust to reflect the changes. You may use larger values
- than would appear on the 80 column screen. In such instances you
- should toggle word wrap "off" and scroll to the right to display text
- beyond the on-screen right margin. The current values of the margins
- appears on the status line.
-
- ALT-P: PRINTING
- ---------------
- You may print the current file at any time by pressing [ALT]-[P].
- Printing may be aborted at any time by pressing [ESC]. The format of
- the printed page is determined by the current settings of the page

-
- If you have inserted field in this document and wish to print a mail
- merging, a filter will appear here to allow you to select which
- records will be printed. (It is explained later in this chapter. (See
- "FILE FILTER")
-
- ALT-R: SEARCH AND REPLACE
- -------------------------
- You can search for all or only specific occurrences of a character
- string. When you press [ALT]-[R], you will be prompted to first enter
- the search string, then the replacement string. You will then be asked
- if you want to replace all occurrences of the search string. If you
- select [N]o, you will be prompted to enter the number of occurrences
- to replace. Please note that the search begins at the top of the file
- and continues either to the end of the file or until the number of
- occurrences you specified has been replaced.
-
- ALT-Y: CURRENT DIRECTORY / WILDCARD
- -----------------------------------
- This little word processor gives you the ability to change the working
- directory or filemask at any time. When you first enter it, the
- current directory will be set to the default DOS directory, and the
- wildcard will be set to "*.*". If you would like to change either the
- directory where this program looks for files or the wildcard used
- (e.g., "*.txt", "*.doc"), press [ALT]-[Y] and enter the new
- information. You do not have to enter slashes ("\") in front or back
- of the directory UNLESS you include a wildcard.
-
- For example, to change the current directory to "\MYSTUFF\", you only
- need to enter "MYSTUFF" (no quotes). However, if you want the program
- to only look for ".LET" files in the MYSTUFF directory, you must enter
- "\MYSTUFF\*.LET".
